Description
This work represents what becomes possible when an artist facing death chooses to distill a lifetime of learning into invitation: not just to witness transformation, but to join it.
This intimate visual meditation on racial healing premiered at South Africa’s Woordfees Festival as part of Die Veldhospitaal (The Field Hospital), where it served as “The Eyes”—bearing witness to trauma and transformation. Through seven illustrated essays combining found footage, pen-and-ink illustration, historical photography, and watercolor, Hanna invites viewers into her journey from racial blindness toward authentic cross-racial relationship. Her unflinching honesty about avoidance, shame, and the slow work of building trust creates permission for viewers to examine their own choices.
Impact
The film has been received warmly by festival audiences and subsequent Zoom viewings, which have always sparked reflection and dialogue. From this it is clear that the film does its intended work: inviting viewers to consider their own patterns as reflected in Hanna’s moments of avoidance, courage to stay in difficult conversations, and recognizing that transformation is possible. The film’s gentle but honest approach makes the unbearable bearable, creating space for the kind of reflection that leads to action.
Our intention to produce resources for leaders and groups is a response to requests. First from a local church leader, then others who want to use the film as a catalyst for reflection, dialogue, and practice.
